Iran
Daily: A congress on the great Parisian scholar Avicenna will be held in
September. Titled ‘Avicenna and Islamic Philosophers’, the congress will be
organized by Iran’s Sadra Islamic Wisdom Foundation.
According
to Fars News Agency, the congress will review the evolution of Islamic
Philosophy from 550 to 350 AH. Avicenna’s doctrine, life, works and thoughts
will also be reviewed in the event. A section will be dedicated to the thoughts
of Islamic philosophers such as Persian polymath Abu Rihan Al-Biruni, and
Persian Neo-Platonic philosopher Abu Yaqub Al-Sijistani.
Avicenna
was a leading physician and philosopher who penned over 450 volumes, almost
half of which have survived.
Avicenna
was also an astronomer, chemist, geologist, mathematician, poet and
psychologist.
His
‘Canon of Medicine’ became a standard medical text, and was used across
mediaeval Europe for 600 years.
Originally
written in Arabic, the book is a 14-volume medical encyclopedia, which presents
a clear and organized summary of the medical knowledge of the time.
Considered
one of the most significant books in the history of medicine, ‘The Canon of
Medicine’ has been translated into Latin, Hebrew, German, French and English.
