The
complete version of “The Canon of Medicine” written by Avicenna, the Iranian
physician and the most famous and influential of the philosopher-scientists of
Islam was translated and published in Chinese.
Translated
by scholar Zhu Ming from Beijing Medical University, the book was rendered into
Chinese from the English language and was released in China in June 2010.
The
book contains four chapters including the biography of Avicenna (980-1037), as
well as images of the English and German translations.
“The Canon of Medicine” has long been popular in China with
Chinese physicians and parts of the book have been previously translated and
used there. However, this is the first time the entire book has been released.
Avicenna’s
Canon is a 14-volume medical encyclopedia completed in 1025. It presents a
clear and organized summary of all the medical knowledge of the time. Originally
written in Arabic, the book was later translated into a number of other
languages, including Persian, Latin, Hebrew, German, French and English.
The
Canon is considered one of the most famous books in the history of medicine.
