Islamic scholars’ interpretation of Aristotle’s Poetics
Mahmood Yusefsani is translating a number of treatises by Islamic philosophers containing their interpretation and critique of Aristotle’s “Poetics”.

Yusefsani said, “Various Islamic philosophers have stated their opinions regarding Aristotle’s Poetics, but the ideas of eight philosophers whose treatises I have selected for translation are more outstanding.”

He added: “Farabi, Avicenna, Ibn Roshd, Abulbarakat Bagdadi, Shahrezuri, and Khajeh Nasir are among philosophers whose words will be presented in this volume as excerpts of different treatises.”

Yusefsani asserted that while some Islamic philosophers have separate essays on ‘Poetics’, many others have mentioned their opinions along with other arguments.

Referring to the similar impression of many of these philosophers from Aristotle’s Poetics, he said there are repetitions found in these articles, yet each contains important variations. He added that by going through these essays we can understand the application of such knowledge by our ancestors.

“Another interesting point I have come across while translating these articles was the waning interest in Aristotle’s Poetics with the passage of time; the change is natural however.

Academic member of Iran Philosophy Institute finally added that he is translating the volume by order of Minooye Kherad Publications, and that he has not decided upon the title yet.
